Shillong
Shillong, formerly called Yeddo or Lewduh, Shillong, capital of Meghalaya state, north-eastern India. The city is located in the east-central part of the state on the Shillong Plateau, at an elevation of 4,990 feet (1,520 metres).
Shillong first became prominent in 1864, when it succeeded Cherrapunji as the district headquarters. In 1874 it was made the capital of the new province of Assam. An earthquake destroyed the city in 1897, necessitating its complete rebuilding. The North East Frontier Agency’s headquarters were in Shillong until that region became the union territory of Arunachal Pradesh in 1972. In that year Shillong became the capital of Meghalaya, which had been newly created out of territory that was formerly within the state of Assam.
Shillong, a popular tourist destination, is at the core of one of the largest urban areas in north-eastern India. It is an important trade centre for agricultural products and has research stations focusing on dairy farm, fruit, and silk production. It also has the Pasteur Institute and Medical Research Institute and is the home of North-Eastern Hill University (founded 1973).
Due to its beautiful lakes, waterfalls, pine forests and green mountains, the British called Shillong the ‘Scotland of the East’. The British developed it like many other hill-stations during British Raj. There are several picturesque places to visit in Shillong including Shillong Peak, Umiam lake, Elephant falls and Lady Hydari Park among others.
Mawlynnong Village, one of the cleanest villages in Asia lies in Shillong. The people of the village have taken it upon themselves to ensure that the village is kept clean at all times. The Shillong Baptist Church, the Shillong Catholic Cathedral, the Laitumkhrah Presbytarian Church, the Nokrek National Park and the Air Force Museum are other sites you must visit in Shillong.

The nearest airport to Shillong is the Umroi Airport which is around 30 km away from the main Shillong city, Umroi Airport is less preferred by tourists due to its limited connectivity to the main Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. People traveling to Shillong generally prefer taking flight to the Guwahati airport as it is well connected with all other major cities in India.

There are as such no proper rail lines in Meghalaya. Guwahati railway station is the nearest railway station situated at a distance of 105 Km from Shillong. The city is well connected to all other major cities of the country via rail medium. There are also taxi as well as bus facility for Shillong.
