The State of West Bengal is located in between the Himalayan Range in the North and North-East and the Bay of Bengal in the South.The steel, engineering goods and of late the information technology are also bringing in valuable foreign exchanges. The sweet water and marine fishing have been big contributions to the economy of West Bengal. With its major agricultural resource, West Bengal is the sixth-largest contributor to India’s net domestic product. But the trend in the economy of West Bengal shows that especially the tourism sector is rapidly increasing in importance during the last few years.

The tourism in the State of West Bengal is primarily cultural. The Indian Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), the India Tourism, Govt. of India, the Department of Tourism, Government of West Bengal and the West Bengal Tourism Development Corporation (WBTDC), undertake the policies of developing and provide directions for the better management of tourism in the State.

The State‘s tourism policy envisages providing policies along with organizational and strategic direction, to develop the places of tourist interests. It also provides comfortable environment with necessary facilities to tourists and pilgrims, to improve the quality of tourism product and to market the tourism products domestically and internationally for the economic, environmental, social and cultural benefits for the visitors.

The cultural and natural diversities of the State of West Bengal are very attractive to both the domestic and foreign tourists. Now-a-days, the cultural tourism is very popular among the visitors and tourists. The museums and heritage sites are the important components of cultural tourism which is yet to be explored in the State of West Bengal.

    Connectivity

    There are two major airports in West Bengal- Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport, located in Kolkata and Bagdogra airport. Regular flights operate from major cities of the country and the world.
    The state is well-known for its good rail connectivity with different parts of the country. Main railheads are Howrah railway station and Sealdah railway station. Both the rail junctions are located in the capital city Kolkata. Then, there is New Jalpaiguri railway station, located near to Siliguri. Trains connect almost nook and corner of the state. Even, the Darjeeling Toy Train, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is a scenic rail journey taking to the hill station Darjeeling.
